Short answer: we appraise coins for free at our shop in Greenville, and there is no obligation to sell. Bring one coin or a whole collection, and we will value each piece in front of you, on the higher of melt or collector value, the same visit.

Not sure what your coins are worth? That is exactly what we are here for. We are a family shop. Dan Hilliard started it in 2012, and his sons Michael and Greg are at the counter today, with 15+ years going through coins and collections for Upstate families. Bring your coins in and we will go through them with you, right at the counter, and tell you straight what you have.

What a coin appraisal actually tells you

Every coin is worth at least its melt value, which is the metal it contains at the live spot price. Some coins are worth a lot more for their collector, or numismatic, value, which comes down to the date, mint mark, condition, and how rare the coin is.

A worn, common-date silver dollar might be worth its silver and no more. A key date, or the same coin in high grade, can be worth many times that. The only way to know which one you are holding is to have someone look at it properly. We check every coin for both melt and collector value and pay you the higher of the two.

What we appraise

Bring one coin or a whole box. We appraise and buy:

  • Silver dollars, including Morgan and Peace dollars
  • 90 percent “junk” silver (pre-1965 dimes, quarters, half dollars) and 40 percent Kennedy halves
  • Wheat cents, Indian Head cents, buffalo nickels, and other older US coins
  • Key-date and better-date coins, and certified or graded coins (PCGS, NGC)
  • Gold and silver bullion coins (American Eagles, Canadian Maples, Krugerrands)
  • Proof and mint sets, commemoratives, and world coins
  • Whole collections and inherited estates

Coin appraisal questions we hear

Where can I get my coins appraised near me in Greenville?

Right at our counter on Woodruff Rd. Walk in during business hours with your coins and a photo ID, and one of us (Dan, Michael, or Greg) will go through them with you. There is no charge to find out what you have.

How do I get coins appraised without getting ripped off?

Go to a buyer who shows you the work. We check each coin in front of you for date, mint mark, and condition, weigh and test the metal, and explain what drives the value before we ever talk price. You see how we got to the number, and there is no pressure to sell. It never hurts to call around and compare, and most folks come back to us.

Do you charge for a coin appraisal?

No. Appraisals at our shop are free, whether you sell to us or not. Bring one coin or a whole collection.

How do I know if my coin is valuable?

Value comes down to date, mint mark, condition (grade), and rarity, on top of the metal it is made of. Some coins are worth their silver or gold, and some are worth much more to a collector. The safest way to know is to bring them in. We will tell you straight what is worth melt and what is worth more as a collectible.

What is the difference between melt value and collector value?

Melt value is what the metal in the coin is worth at the live spot price. Collector, or numismatic, value is what a coin is worth to collectors for its date, condition, and rarity. We check every coin for both and pay you the higher of the two.

Can you appraise a whole collection or an inherited estate?

Yes, we do it all the time. If you inherited coins and do not know where to start, bring the whole thing in and we will sort and value it with you. For a large collection, call ahead so we can set aside time.

Do I need an appointment?

No. Walk in during business hours. For large collections or estates, a quick call ahead helps us set aside time for you.

Who is doing your appraisal

Greenville Gold & Silver is family-run. Dan Hilliard opened the shop in 2012, and his sons Michael and Greg run the counter today. When you bring coins in, you are dealing with the family who owns the place, not a clerk or a mail-in service. That is why folks call around, compare, and still come back to us.
