The Gold Eagle Is Kind of a Big Deal
If you’ve spent any time around gold coins, you’ve seen an American Gold Eagle. It’s the official gold bullion coin of the United States, minted by the US Mint since 1986, and it’s still the most recognized gold coin we handle at Greenville Gold & Silver. There’s a reason for that.
When someone walks in with gold coins they’ve inherited, bought years ago, or just accumulated over time, Eagles are far and away the most common thing we see. And when someone comes in wanting to buy gold bullion in Greenville, the Eagle is usually the first coin we talk about.
What Makes a Gold Eagle Different
A few things set Gold Eagles apart from other bullion coins.
First, the gold content. A 1 troy ounce Gold Eagle contains exactly 1 troy ounce of pure gold (the coin itself is slightly heavier because it’s alloyed with copper and silver for durability). The smaller sizes, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz, contain exactly what they say.
Second, the backing. These are US legal tender coins. The face values are nominal ($50 for the 1 oz), but the US government guarantees the gold content. That guarantee matters to buyers worldwide, which is part of why Eagles trade so easily.
Third, the design. The obverse is based on Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ classic Walking Liberty design. The reverse shows a family of eagles. They’re genuinely beautiful coins, and that matters when you’re holding real money in your hand.
Bullion Eagles vs. Proof Eagles: Know the Difference
This is where people sometimes get confused, so it’s worth slowing down.
- Bullion Eagles are made for investors. They’re struck for gold content, not collector finish. Value tracks closely with spot price.
- Proof Eagles are collector coins. They have a mirror-like finish, come in a presentation box, and carry a premium over spot. Some are graded by services like PCGS or NGC, which can add more value.
- Type 1 vs. Type 2: In 2021 the US Mint redesigned the reverse. Pre-2021 coins are Type 1; 2021 and later are Type 2. Both are genuine Gold Eagles. Some collectors prefer one over the other, but for most sellers the difference is minor.
When you bring Eagles in to sell, we’ll look at the date, the condition, and whether it’s bullion or proof. Most of the time, a bullion Eagle trades right around spot. A proof or graded coin might be worth more. We’ll tell you which is which, tested and priced in front of you.
What Are Gold Eagles Worth Right Now
Gold Eagles track the spot price of gold. Spot moves every trading day, sometimes a lot. We don’t publish a fixed price here because it would be wrong by the time you read it. What we can tell you is how the math works: a 1 oz Eagle is worth approximately 1 troy ounce of gold at current spot, plus or minus a premium depending on whether you’re buying or selling.
When you sell to us, you get top dollar based on that day’s spot. When you buy from us, you pay spot plus a modest premium. That’s the honest version of how bullion pricing works, and we think you deserve to hear it plainly. Check our FAQ page if you have more questions about how we price gold.
One thing worth knowing: if spot dips, that’s historically been a good time to add to a stack. Buy the dip is a real strategy, not just a phrase.

Can I sell just one Gold Eagle, or do I need a larger quantity?
One coin is fine. We buy single Eagles and large collections alike. There’s no minimum. If you have one coin you want to turn into cash, come on in.
Do you pay more for older or rarer Gold Eagles?
Most bullion-strike Eagles trade close to spot regardless of date. Proof coins, low-mintage dates, and graded examples can carry a premium. We’ll evaluate what you have and explain the difference before we make an offer.
