You’ve Got Gold. Now What?
Maybe it’s a drawer full of old jewelry. Maybe it’s a handful of coins you inherited. Maybe you know the spot price and you’re ready to sell. Whatever brought you here, the process of selling gold doesn’t have to be complicated or stressful. At Greenville Gold & Silver on Woodruff Rd, we walk you through every step, in plain language, before you decide anything.
Here’s exactly what that looks like.
Step 1: Bring It In
You don’t need an appointment. Walk in during business hours, hand us what you’ve got, and we’ll take a look. We see everything: broken chains, mismatched earrings, class rings, old dental gold, coins, bars, scrap. If it’s gold, we want to see it.
One thing worth knowing: the more you bring at once, the more efficient the process. But there’s no minimum. A single ring is fine.
Step 2: We Test It in Front of You
This part matters. We use an XRF analyzer to test your gold. The machine reads the metal’s actual composition in seconds and tells us exactly what we’re working with. You watch the whole thing. No back room, no guessing, no taking your word for it and no asking you to take ours.
XRF testing is the same technology used by refineries and serious dealers. It tells us the karat (10k, 14k, 18k, 22k, 24k) and the actual gold content by percentage. That number is what drives the offer.
If you’ve been to other buyers and felt like the process was a mystery, that’s the difference. We show you the number.
Step 3: We Weigh It
Gold is measured in troy ounces. One troy ounce is about 31.1 grams, slightly heavier than the standard ounce you’d use for flour. We weigh your gold on a calibrated scale, also in front of you, and we’re happy to explain the math.
The formula is straightforward: weight times gold purity times the current spot price equals melt value. Your offer is based on a percentage of that melt value. We’ll tell you what that percentage is before you agree to anything.
Step 4: We Make an Offer
The offer is based on real numbers: the XRF reading, the weight, and the live spot price of gold. We pay top dollar because we want to earn your business and your referrals. We’ve been doing this since 2012 and we’ve got 700+ five-star reviews. Low-ball offers don’t build that kind of reputation.
You are never obligated to sell. If the offer doesn’t work for you, take your gold home. No hard feelings, no pressure. We’d rather you leave happy than leave with regret. And as we always say: don’t sell anything you’ll miss.
Step 5: You Get Paid
If you accept the offer, we pay cash on the spot. For larger purchases we may pay by check, and we’ll tell you that upfront. No waiting, no processing delays, no “we’ll mail you a check.”
The whole process, from walking in to walking out with cash, usually takes under 30 minutes.
What Kinds of Gold Do We Buy?
- Gold jewelry: rings, chains, bracelets, earrings, pendants (any karat)
- Broken or damaged pieces (we buy for melt value, condition doesn’t matter)
- Gold coins: American Gold Eagles, Krugerrands, Maple Leafs, and more
- Gold bullion bars and rounds
- Dental gold
- Estate gold and inherited pieces
- Scrap gold of any kind
Not sure if what you have qualifies? Bring it in. The test is free and there’s no obligation.
A Note on Spot Price
Gold’s spot price changes every trading day. What you’re offered today may be slightly different from what you’d be offered next week. If you’ve been watching the market and waiting for the right moment, that’s a reasonable approach. Just know that timing the market perfectly is hard. Most people are better off selling when the offer works for their situation, not chasing a peak that may or may not come.

Why Sell to a Local Coin Shop Instead of Mailing It In?
Mail-in gold buyers exist. Some are legitimate. But when you mail your gold, you give up two things: the ability to watch the testing, and the ability to walk away if the offer is low. With a local gold buyer in Greenville, you’re in the room. You see the scale. You see the XRF number. You decide on the spot.
We’re not a pop-up or a pawn counter. We’re a family business that’s been on Woodruff Rd for over a decade. That accountability means something.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to clean my gold before bringing it in?
No. Bring it as-is. Dirt and tarnish don’t affect the XRF reading or the weight in any meaningful way. We’ve seen everything and it doesn’t slow us down.
What if I don’t know the karat of my gold?
That’s exactly what the XRF test is for. You don’t need to know anything going in. We’ll identify the metal and the purity for you, right there at the counter.
Can I sell gold and buy bullion on the same visit?
Absolutely. Some customers sell scrap gold and use part of the proceeds to pick up a coin or a bar the same day. If you’re interested in buying investment metals, take a look at our bullion page to see what we carry. And if you have questions before you come in, reach out here anytime.
